LIVONIA, MICH. – Madonna University students are making a difference in their community through service learning initiatives. In two recent projects, students have provided essential support to families in need and to animals at the Michigan Humane Society.
Through the United Way of Southeastern Michigan, Michelle Proctor, a sociology professor and program director, along with students in the Introduction to Community Leadership course, constructed kits for the "Supporting Our Neighbors" project. The kits included essential items for families in need. In our region, nearly 40 percent of families struggle to afford their basic needs and are unable to afford essential household and personal hygiene items. These kits will be delivered to Redford Interfaith Relief (a coalition of churches dedicated to ending hunger and poverty) for distribution.
Students from the Animal Awareness Club completed a very successful food and supply drive for the Michigan Humane Society. The donations were accepted on Madonna's campus and other nearby locations in Livonia. The amount of pet food and supplies collected on campus and beyond was overwhelming. Many thanks to all those who participated in this project!
These two initiatives, along with countless others, highlight the commitment to community service that permeates the Madonna University experience. Service learning is more than just an extracurricular activity, it is a cornerstone of the university's ethos, guiding students toward becoming active participants in shaping a more compassionate and just world.
Madonna University is immensely proud of its students for their dedication to service learning. Their selfless efforts are not only making a difference in the lives of others but also cultivating a sense of civic responsibility that will extend far beyond their academic years. The university is committed to fostering this spirit of service, ensuring that Madonna students continue to make a positive impact on their communities and the world at large.
