LIVONIA, MICH. – Madonna University’s Lyric Theatre will debut unLIKELY: A Musical Revue tonight, launching a weekend of performances that showcase an eclectic mix of musical theater favorites. The production runs Nov. 21–23 and features selections from Les Misérables, Hamilton, Chicago, Cabaret, Hair, Wicked and more.
Unlike traditional revues, unLIKELY is not based on any licensed structure. Instead, the show is fully curated by the Lyric Theatre program to highlight the strengths of its cast. Director Barbara Wiltse said the team built the performance around what the students do best, ensuring that every cast member has a featured moment.
Audiences can expect numbers from shows the program would not typically be able to present in full, whether due to licensing restrictions, staging limitations or the need for larger or more diverse casts. The revue format gives students the chance to explore iconic songs and styles that would otherwise be out of reach.
Behind the scenes, this year’s production introduces a striking, minimalist design. The Kresge auditorium will feature black marley flooring laid over the oak stage and newly hung black curtains to create an all-black backdrop. All set pieces—including chairs, stools and tables—are also black, placing full visual emphasis on the performers and their costume pieces.
Wiltse said she hopes the Madonna community will turn out to support the students, who rehearse only twice per week yet commit significant effort to the production. The show includes group numbers, solos and a range of dance styles, including tap and choreography inspired by Bob Fosse. Some choreography was created by a current student and an alum who is also performing.
With familiar hits alongside lesser-known selections, unLIKELY offers a fresh and engaging experience for musical theater fans.
