LIVONIA, MICH. – First-year students gathered in Madonna University's Franciscan Center on Nov. 7 for a makeup Franciscan Day of Service session, led by Paula Soter, director of Campus Ministry.
Students worked on several projects, including crafting cards for veterans to thank them for their military service and sacrifice. The 65 homemade cards were distributed at a Veterans Day dinner at the American Legion Post in Livonia, Soter said.
Students also assisted Sister Nancy Marie Jamroz and the Center for Catholic Studies and Interfaith Dialogue by writing letters of thanks to more than 50 places of worship in Livonia. The letters, offering appreciation for the vital role that churches and other places of worship play in the community, will be mailed before Thanksgiving.
Other Franciscan Day of Service projects included creative festive holiday placemats for more than 100 residents of Marywood Nursing Center, and working with Urban Neighborhood Initiatives to remove weeds at Lafayette Playlot, among other local initiatives.
"It is a joy to watch our students come to life when they gather to do service for others," Soter reflected.
