About CPI

The Center for Personalized Instruction (CPI), located in the University Library of the Academic Building on Madonna University's Livonia campus, is a student-focused office where resources are readily accessible and student learning is enhanced by providing individualized academic support.

Aligning with the Franciscan values of Madonna University, the mission of the Center for Personalized Instruction is to cultivate a supportive learning environment by providing intentional academic support that empowers students to become confident and successful learners.

Tutoring - One on One

Madonna University provides free tutoring services for students across a wide range of courses each semester. Students meet with their assigned tutor for one hour per week at a scheduled time that works for both parties.

Each tutor is carefully selected based on their expertise in specific subject areas and receives specialized training to help students:

  • Master challenging course content
  • Develop effective study skills and strategies
  • Build confidence in their academic abilities
  • Achieve their individual learning goals

Tutoring is available for many courses throughout the semester. Students who need support in a course not currently listed are encouraged to contact Lilia Lamas at lilialamas@madonna.edu to explore available options.

Tutoring sessions are offered both online via Zoom and in-person to accommodate different learning preferences and schedules. Appointments are offered on a flexible schedule - students are encouraged to check WC Online for tutoring availability, or to email a tutor if they need an appointment outside of the listed hours.

Supplemental Instruction - Peer Led Study Groups

Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides free, small-group study sessions for students enrolled in historically challenging courses. These sessions are led by students who have previously excelled in the same classes and are trained to help their peers succeed.

SI leaders guide small groups of students through:

  • Reviewing lecture notes and course readings
  • Learning effective study strategies and techniques
  • Breaking down complex course concepts
  • Practicing problem-solving methods specific to the subject

SI leaders bring a unique perspective—they've recently navigated the same coursework and understand the specific challenges students face. They're trained to connect difficult course material with proven study methods, creating an environment where students can learn from both the leader and each other.

Students who participate in SI typically experience improved course grades, higher course completion rates, and better preparation for academic success and graduation. Most sessions are held in person, allowing students to build connections with classmates while mastering difficult material.
