LIVONIA, MICH. – Madonna University is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, from September 15 to October 15, by highlighting the university’s Spanish minors. Madonna’s Spanish program is built so that students in any major can pick up real language skills through a minor or a field-specific certificate.
Students often assume that a language program is only accessible if you plan to major in it. At Madonna, our Spanish program also offers Spanish minor that pairs with any major. Additionally, there are certificates for students who are looking for language skills tied directly to their career field like Spanish for Law Enforcement, Spanish for Medical Settings, and Spanish for Business. This means that a nursing, criminal justice, or business student can graduate with practical, job-relevant Spanish without shifting their major at all.
For students who are looking for more than minoring in Spanish, there are also full Bachelor of Arts in Spanish as well as a Spanish for Teacher Certification track for future educators.
The program’s coursework is a mix of linguistics, literature, and cultural studies and is paired with experiential learning like independent research, and conference presentations. Those opportunities include learning alongside Hispanic communities, like Southwest Detroit, which is only about 20 minutes from Madonna’s campus.
Pairing a Spanish minor or certificate with your major opens doors in your professional endeavors. It is a practical skill in healthcare, law enforcement, business, and education, and being able to communicate with clients, patients, or community members is an increasingly valuable skill to have.
Madonna’s Spanish program is directed by Dr. Elizabeth Goulette, who is bilingual and holds a Michigan teaching certification in Spanish for grades 6-12.
If you would like to learn more about the Spanish minor, or are already familiar with speaking Spanish and want to learn to make that count towards your degree, you can visit the Spanish program webpage.
