International students pursuing higher education in the United States are faced with a variety of admission requirements, with English language proficiency remaining one of the most important items on the list. As testing options continue to evolve for international students considering studying abroad in the United States, universities are constantly expanding the different ways that these students can demonstrate their academic readiness. With the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) paper-and-pencil test discontinued in January 2024, Madonna University is excited to join more than 4,000 colleges and universities in the United States that accept the Duolingo English test as proof of English language proficiency.
For many prospective international graduate students, flexible testing options like Duolingo provide a more easily accessible and affordable alternative to complete their admission requirements. Duolingo is currently priced at $70 + taxes, where applicable. Unlike traditional exams that require scheduled testing centers or times, the Duolingo English test can be completed online from anywhere, offering flexibility for different time zones, work or class schedules, or travel limitations.
At Madonna University, applicants must receive a minimum score of 105 on the Duolingo English exam to be considered for undergraduate admission, or a minimum score of 110 for graduate admission.
At Madonna University, non-native English speakers can demonstrate their language proficiency through several accepted pathways, including the internet-based TOEFL, IELTS (International English Language Testing System), PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English), and the MET (Michigan English Test). Madonna University is also reviewing updates to the current policy to better align with modern testing standards that are set by today’s international student base.
Students who do not meet proficiency requirements may find alternative pathways to admission through ESL coursework and various academic support programs. These resources, guided by an ESL advisor, are designed to assist students in strengthening their language skills while helping build confidence in making the transition into university coursework. Students are required to successfully complete one or more semesters of the Intensive English Program. Graduate students in the Intensive English program must complete ESL 5230 (Graduate Research Paper Writing), 3 s.h., as their final ESL course.
Through these policy changes, Madonna University continues to balance course accessibility with academic excellence, ensuring that graduate students are well-equipped to thrive in the programs they choose.
