As a student in the Madonna MATESOL (Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program you will become part of a diverse, vibrant community of professionals dedicated to ESL education. You will gain sound foundations in linguistics, second language acquisition theories, as well as in cultural aspects of language learning, teaching, and assessment with a clear focus on classroom practices. You will receive highly sought TESOL professional credentials, as our program, since its establishment in 1999, gained approval of the Michigan Board of Education for its ESL (NS) Endorsement Coursework and received national recognition from TESOL, the national organization of teachers of English to speakers of other languages. NS (ESL) Endorsement

Madonna University's state-approved required coursework for NS (ESL) Endorsement consists of 28 credits that are part of the MATESOL program. In addition to completing an approved coursework, the Michigan Department of Education requires that candidates for an ESL Endorsement pass MTTC # 86 and hold a valid teaching certificate.

Elizabeth Goulette, Ph.D.

Dr. Goulette became Program Director in 2021. Her Ph.D. is in Foreign and Second Language Education, and her areas of expertise are: heritage language learners, language pedagogy, and training teacher candidates. 

In the TESOL program, she teaches courses in linguistics, methods, and second language acquisition. She also serves as the student advisor.

Dr. Goulette has taught post-secondary ESL and all levels and classes of Spanish. She also has an extensive history of training diverse teacher candidates since 2014.

Dr. Goulette is bilingual in English and Spanish. She maintains a Michigan teaching certificate in English and Spanish, grades 6-12.

Joshua Gartner, M.A.

Mr. Gartner teaches the methods of teaching speaking and listening to English language learners.

He brings to his classroom an extensive experience of teaching ESL both in high school and college.

In addition to English, Mr Gartner is fluent in German.

Boguslawa Gatarek, Ph.D.

Dr. Gatarek has taught various theoretical courses in the MATESOL program since 2000.

She has been instrumental in shaping the program's curriculum in the areas of research methods, language development, teaching and learning theories, and learning and culture.

Dr. Gatarek brings to her instruction academic knowledge in cognitive psychology and education as well as rich experience in living and studying in different countries.

In addition to English, she speaks Polish and Russian.
