It’s not just a slogan: at Madonna University your success really is “our greatest achievement.” Whether you’re pursuing a career in nursing, education, business, criminal justice, or any other discipline at Madonna, your professors do their utmost to prepare you for employment opportunities after graduation. This is why they emphasize writing competency.
The National Commission on Writing for America’s Families, Schools, and Colleges conducted a survey that
… reveals that good writing is taken as a given in today’s professional work. Writing is a “threshold skill” for salaried employment and promotion. It is particularly important in services and in finance, insurance, and real estate .. growing employment sectors that are likely to generate the most new jobs in the coming decade. In a nutshell, the survey confirms our conviction that individual opportunity in the United States depends critically on the ability to present one’s thoughts coherently, cogently, and persuasively on paper (National Commission, 5).
The writing programs at Madonna University are designed to benefit each of our students. Our Writing Assessment and Placement Program provides a “check-up” for individual students’ writing capabilities and places them in College Composition courses (or provides exemptions) based on perceived needs. The free tutoring services made available through the Madonna University Writing Center offer face-to-face or distance support for students seeking help with any writing assignment in any course—at any stage of the writing process.
For students who enjoy writing and plan either to write for a living or add a credential that will broaden their employment opportunities, Madonna University offers writing majors and minors. The Writing Major or Minor (General) provides a broad overview that allows students to explore the field. It is designed for students preparing to be fiction or nonfiction writers and editors or professionals in other fields that demand significant writing skills. The Professional and Technical Writing Major or Minor focuses on practical nuts-and-bolts writing for industries and corporations. It is designed for students who will work for such employers as businesses with a Web presence, software publishers, computer systems designers, consulting services, healthcare businesses, architectural firms, etc.
