Sign Language Studies

For over a quarter century (since 1975) the Sign Languages Studies (SLS) department at Madonna University has offered Bachelor of Arts degrees in Sign Language Studies. Graduates of the program are working in diverse settings that allow them to incorporate their knowledge and skill in Sign

Language and Deaf studies. Among them are interpreters, teachers, social workers, family counselors, community advocates, gerontologists, and nurses. Students have double-majored in a range of disciplines including psychology, education, nursing, criminal justice, computer science and additional areas in the social sciences, humanities and business.

SLS
SLS graduates also have set up their own businesses as free-lance interpreters and community referral agency directors providing information to the community at large about interpreting and deafness related issues. The core SLS curriculum reflects the continued commitment of the SLS faculty to current information and their professional linkages to local, national and international resources. The SLS faculty at Madonna University has backgrounds in education, law and linguistics and interpreting. The SLS curriculum continues to integrate the philosophy that Sign Language is a human right and incorporates this philosophy into the SLS curriculum and its mission statement.
