Can the classes be taken out of sequence?  (i.e., Can a student take GER 4880 before GER 4870?)

It is recommended that the classes be taken in order (GER 4870,4850,4880).  Taking classes out of sequence must be okayed by the coordinator of the program

Who actually teaches the classes?

An expert in the long-term care industry teaches each class.  The speakers are professionals in the field of long-term care.  The material presented is based on research, theory and practical experiences.  The presenters are chosen for their experience in the field, and for their education and expertise.  All of the speakers have a connection to long-term care.  All speakers share the goals of the Madonna University Gerontology Department, including utilizing a knowledge base that acknowledges the physical, social, spiritual and psychological aspects of aging.  The speakers are keenly aware of their professional responsibilities in the field of aging and are seeking to enhance quality of life for the elderly.

Who should take these classes?

Anyone wishing to prepare for the state and federal NHA examinations would benefit from taking these classes.  Individuals interested in Nursing Home Administration as a career and anyone involved in housing and quality care for the elderly; or those who wish to review and update their knowledge in long-term care administration may take the classes.

Are there any prerequisites?

No.  Anyone interested in sitting for the federal and state NHA examinations may register for the classes.  Students working toward a long term care degree may decide to take these classes in the senior year, since they are upper level classes.

It is imperative that participants are able to demonstrate good writing skill by synthesizing the main ideas shared in class into well-written, professional papers.

What are the requirements of Madonna University NHA classes?

The requirements of the classes will be reviewed at the beginning of each of the three segments.  Class participation, tests and written assignments are included in the requirements.   Students are expected at all sessions and attendance will be taken.  If a student misses more than one session of a segment he/she must drop the class.  Participants are expected to remain throughout each session, both morning and afternoon.

Can folks still sit for the NHA exams if opting for CEUs instead of academic credit?

Yes, by asking for CEU credit at the time of registration.  A person CANNOT convert from continuing education to academic credit (letter grade) when the classes are completed.

How much do the classes cost?

Please call the registrar (734)432-5400 to ask for the current registration fees.

Would these classes be beneficial to someone who works entirely with assisted living residents?

Absolutely!  We have many past students who have taken the classes while working in the field of assisted living.  Anyone wishing employment in, or currently working in a facility housing the elderly would greatly benefit from these classes because the same information is necessary to successfully run any facility.

How do I receive additional information?

To receive additional information you can email the Madonna University Nursing Home Administration Coordinator Carole Galea (cgalea@madonna.edu) or call her at (734)929-6707 to ask your specific questions.  Please leave your name, address, and telephone number(s) and let her know the best time(s) to reach you.
