Educational Objectives

Acquire and demonstrate an understanding of the communication process including acquisition of language, functions of verbal and non-verbal communication, barriers to communication and effective communication techniques in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Develop and demonstrate the ability to write effective, grammatical English prose appropriate to various modes of discourse.

Develop the ability to respond thoughtfully and critically to literary texts and to articulate responses through appropriate forms of discourse.

Develop the ability to provide information orally, in a clear, effective manner, in a variety of situations including formal and informal, large and small group settings.

Make meaningful connections between the ideas and experiences depicted in written and visual texts and knowledge/experience of the world outside those texts.

Understand and articulate the value of linguistic and cultural differences for the extended awareness they provide of the overall culture and richness of human diversity.

 


NOTE: This major is designed for students preparing for K-8 teaching.
