Language Arts

Overview
The Language Arts Program provides prospective K-8 teachers with the practical coursework and theoretical framework needed to effectively teach language arts (which include reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing) to elementary school students. Students in this program must also plan to complete the Professional Education Sequence in the College of Education.

Department History/Mission

Language Arts
In response to the need for a major specifically addressing language arts as taught at the elementary level, the English and Communication Arts Department, in conjunction with the College of Education, designed the  Language Arts Major to provide prospective teachers with a firm grounding, encompassing both theory and practice, in language, literature, speech, and writing. Our goal is to create graduates ideally prepared to develop in their pupils a love and understanding of the Language Arts, the vehicles of communication by which we live, work, share and develop ideas of the present, reflect on the past, and anticipate the future.

Program Specifics
This major is specifically intended for students wishing to teach at the elementary level. Required courses have been carefully selected to ensure students are given the knowledge and skills necessary to meet all program objectives essential to a career in teaching Language Arts.
