The English major broadens students' cultural and linguistic understanding of the world through the study of language and literature. The program also provides students with a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of critical reading, writing and communicating.

Department history/mission:
The Department of English and Communication Arts is dedicated to the development of literate, articulate, creative, and reflective learners who are prepared to assume meaningful roles in an increasingly complex, diverse, multicultural, multilingual, and technological world. Throughout the Department’s programs, students learn to respond thoughtfully and critically to texts in all media, and to articulate those responses through appropriate forms of discourse (written, oral, electronic, digital). In keeping with the Franciscan ideal of respect for individual dignity and service to all people, the Department strives to enable and prepare students to successfully complete their selected plans of study. Each student’s path to degree completion is designed to ensure a solid grounding in the liberal arts; professional preparedness; and fulfillment through knowledge acquisition and responsible community/global citizenship.
