Collaborative Studies

Collaborative Studies at Madonna University is the gateway to the university's liberal arts studies. It provides a first-year student experience in a learning community where shared knowledge and shared knowing are teaching and learning characteristics of the linked courses.

Collaborative Studies allows students to take a cluster of core courses along with the same group of peers.

This promotes community building, and is especially convenient for first-year college students who are trying to acclimate themselves to the college environment.

The purpose of Collaborative Studies is in keeping with the University mission of providing a liberal arts education with career preparation and providing opportunities to serve others.

  • The linked liberal arts courses include: Orientation to Higher Education (UNV 1010), required of all recent high school graduates under the age of 24; Communication Skills I (ENG 1010); and a choice of courses which satisfy General Education depending on intended or declared major (BIO 2430, CHM 1110, or HIS 1010).
  • The career preparation elements include: use of computer technology for computing, multimedia, and information literacy; and Service Learning that will extend the students' engagement with various communities.

As a part of Collaborative Studies, students develop their own supportive peer groups during their first year.

  • The support helps students transition from learning strategies in high school to the demands of university studies. The support extends beyond the classroom and often beyond the campus.
  • Shared learning involves students in active learning which makes courses more interesting and exciting, and studying more enjoyable because it is a group activity.
  • The benefit of linked courses and interactive group learning is participation in the larger community where service to others is experienced.
  • Students' academic success increases chances of retention through graduation.

Collaborative Studies courses are available for all majors, and are recommended for first-year university students.
