The Detroit Economic Club meetings are an opportunity for students to attend a meet and greet with a guest speaker and also take a photo. Afterwards, the students attend a lunch provided by their sponsor and hear the guest speaker again. Students are encouraged to ask questions and be involved in the discussion. It is an excellent networking opportunity as well as chance to learn outside of the classroom setting.
I had the opportunity, along with other students and faculty from Madonna University, to attend the DEC meeting at the Westin Book Cadillac hotel in Detroit. The speaker was Dan Loepp, President and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. He discussed the topic of the “new normal” of healthcare and the impact it has on the business community and consumers. During the meet and greet, Leopp discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The main advantage was that the affordable care act provides insurance to everyone. However, the disadvantage is that Obamacare is too complicated with rules and regulations. The goal now is to focus on how to make it less complicated. During the Q&A between the students that attended the meeting and Dan Leopp provided some advice to the students. Geared towards upcoming graduates, Leopp encouraged students to not be bashful, always expand your network and work hard to achieve you dreams and goals.
After the meet and greet there was a luncheon provided by the sponsor. Madonna University’s sponsor was Blue Cross Blue Shield. Dan Leopp spoke again on the impact of healthcare on consumers since the Affordable Care Act has been in place.
