Why Study Early Childhood Education (MAT) at Madonna University?

  • With a Madonna Early Childhood Education Master’s degree, you’ll be highly sought by schools and agencies
  • You’ll delve deeply into understanding how to support growth and development for young children through active learning experiences with talented and experienced professors
  • Small class sizes allow you to build deep relationships and be a part of a supportive learning community with classmates and professors
  • If you have a Michigan elementary teaching certificate, you may opt to pursue either the ZS endorsement only or incorporate as part of your Master’s degree

Perfect for those with elementary teaching certificates or degrees in child development, the master’s in Early Childhood Education is delivered by dedicated faculty members who will challenge and support you. You’ll gain experience in planning for students who are developing typically and atypically, through the use of developmentally appropriate assessments to differentiate instruction to support learning for all. You will become skilled at using current research and the NAEYC standards to support instructional choices, you will further your knowledge about how young children develop and learn, and you will gain confidence in creating partnerships with families. If you are a certified elementary teacher, this program also will prepare you to take the ZS endorsement exam.

Melissa ElseyMelissa Elsey,

Why did you choose Madonna University?
I chose Madonna for my graduate studies due to the fact that I had attended Madonna for my undergraduate work and was amazingly prepared to enter into the education field. I felt my preparation had been phenomenal and I wanted that again!

What do you think makes the experience and education at Madonna special?
I love the small class sizes and the relationships that I formed with my professors and my classmates. I was able to get to know my professors and they knew me. The people at Madonna were there for me even if it wasn't school related, they became my family.

What have you been doing since graduation, career wise? (graduate school, employer?)
While taking my grad classes I was teaching preschool at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School. I continued teaching after graduation and at the end of this school year I will be stepping into a new role as Director of Catechesis and Evangelization for both the parish and school.

How has your Madonna degree played a role in your current position?
My degree is in Early Childhood and Elementary Education but I will not be teaching next year. Had I not returned to Madonna for my Masters I would not have been teaching at the school and would not have had this opportunity to move into a new position.

What has been your most rewarding professional or personal experience since graduating?
Having the feeling of succeeding at something that I thought would be too hard for me to do has given me a confidence and an interest in going further Every day is rewarding. I get to do something I love each day. I have a passion for preschoolers! One of the things that was very rewarding for me was to share this experience with my family especially my two young daughters. For 4 years they watched me persevere and work towards a dream. I hope that through this I have shown them they can do the same.

Why did you choose Madonna University?
I chose Madonna University for many reasons. First, the class sizes are smaller than other universities, making it possible for the teachers to work one-on-one with you. Second, the education program is phenomenal! Before I enrolled at Madonna, I asked many people who previously attended about the education program. I heard nothing but compliments, and today I would agree with all of those colleagues. Last, the location was an easy commute. This is important because I chose not to board on campus.

What do you think makes the experience and education at Madonna special?
My experience at Madonna University was nothing but uplifting. I created many friendships with people on my career path that I still hold dear to this day. I use many teaching techniques in my own classroom today that I learned from my time at Madonna. I would not be the teacher I am today without my education from Madonna University. I have learned so many valuable ways to inspire children to learn; that is what makes my experience at Madonna so special!

What have you been doing since graduation, career wise? (graduate school, employer?)
I am currently teaching Kindergarten at Divine Child Elementary School. Next school year makes ten years of teaching experience for me- ranging from kindergarten through second grade. I was fortunate to have been hired fresh out of college and I owe that to Madonna University. Thank you Madonna for preparing me to be such a successful educator!

What has been your most rewarding professional or personal experience since graduating?
I received both my Bachelor's degree and Master's degree from Madonna University. Without my Madonna education, I would not be as strong and confident in my own classroom. I have learned so many strategies from Madonna educators, as well as my peers, that teaching my students feels like a breeze! Not only has Madonna helped me learn effective teaching techniques, but I have also used my field experiences for guidance. Madonna gave me the opportunity to go out into the teaching world and experience the career first hand. I took in a lot of information and ideas from excellent teachers throughout the education program at Madonna.

What has been your most rewarding professional or personal experience since graduating?
The most rewarding experience in my life has been the birth of my daughter. She is the absolute joy in my life and I strive to be the best teacher for her!

Why did you choose Madonna University?
I choose to attend Madonna University for two reasons; as a child, I always wanted to attend a Catholic school, and I wanted to attend a school that had small classroom sizes to ensure I knew the instructor and they knew me.

What do you think makes the experience and education at Madonna special?
As an older adult learner, the instructors supported me and my learning styles and abilities. Also, they provided the extra attention and support that I needed to help me sustain and progress throughout the program.

What have you been doing since graduation, career wise? (graduate school, employer?)
After receiving my degree, I was promoted to the Assistant Education Manager. Currently, I am the Early Childhood Specialist (ECS) for our Head Start Agency.

How has your Madonna Degree played a role in your current position?
In my role as the Early Childhood Specialist it allows me to coach and mentor new and veteran teachers supporting them to strengthen and enhance their skills. Also, I have received several trainings and certifications.

What has been your most rewarding professional or personal experience since graduating?
After graduation, my relationship has continued to grow with Dr. Mary Tomczyk and she is my mentor. I have been privileged to participate and speak at workshops in ECE incorporating my knowledge and skills acquired at Madonna University.
