The mission of Madonna University’s Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speaker’s of Other Languages program is to provide advanced professional preparation to ESL/EFL teachers through rigorous intellectual inquiry, application of pedagogical knowledge in classroom settings, and community-based service–learning experiences.

The Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language is a graduate program designed to educate and train teachers of English as a second or foreign language. The program offers sound foundations in theoretical and applied linguistics, educational theory and practice, as well as in cultural aspects of language learning, teaching, and assessment. Students choose to concentrate either in
K-12 or adult ESL/EFL education.

The program consists of an introductory seminar, four theoretical courses, four methods courses, and one course each in the categories of assessment, culture, and research methods. Students practice their knowledge in classroom settings during the practicum. The entire curriculum consists of 33 (32 for adult education) semester hours.
