The Interdisciplinary Studies program provides important skill development in a number of areas identified as crucial in the 21st century work force: critical thinking, writing skills, and interdisciplinary analysis.
Each Interdisciplinary Studies student works collaboratively with the IDS Advisor to develop a customized program encompassing the student’s academic and professional goals. This plan of study identifies courses each student has selected to develop his or her degree.
All students earning a bachelor’s degree from Madonna University must meet the same General Education requirements. Interdisciplinary Studies students have much more flexibility selecting the rest of their courses than students in traditional programs. Instead of 30 or more semester hours in one area of study, Interdisciplinary Studies students complete nine hours of Interdisciplinary Studies courses and choose the areas in which the balance of their studies will focus.
With this increased flexibility comes an additional responsibility: receiving IDS Faculty Advisory Committee approval of the student’s plan of study. Traditional programs are pre-approved by the University’s Curriculum and Educational Policy Committee. But since each Interdisciplinary Studies student has an individualized plan of study, each one must be individually approved.
The Interdisciplinary Studies program is intended for the highly motivated student who desires a plan of study with more flexibility and opportunities for interdisciplinary study than traditional, pre-arranged programs. Typically, IDS students are mature, self-directed, and capable of clearly articulating educational, personal, and career goals.
The Interdisciplinary Studies program is open to students who have completed one or more years of college and now wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree. The program consists of 120 semester hours, including the University’s General Education requirements and 45 hours of upper-division courses.
