Introductory Service-Learning Preflection
This is a guided reflection requiring the student to integrate the learning objectives
for the course with service-learning. It also serves as a springboard to get students
to think about and discuss their attitudes about service before they provide it.
This reflection activity should be done prior to the student's first service-learning
experience in the community, but after the service-learning assignment has been
described in the classroom. There are three parts:
- Part 1: EXPECTATIONS:
You have heard the description of your service-learning requirement.
Now consider the following questions:
What are your expectations of the environment in which you will be
fulfilling your service-learning responsibility? (This would
include your immediate work environment, as well the larger
environment, i.e., the neighborhood or community where you
will be doing your service learning.)
What are your expectations of the a) people that you will serve and b)
the professionals or other volunteers you may come in contact with in
the conduct of your service experience?
What are your expectations regarding the specific tasks you will be doing?"
- Part 2: ATTITUDES:
What are your attitudes and feelings concerning the environment, people and tasks?
- Part 3: LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
How might your service-learning experience help you achieve the learning
objectives described in your syllabus?
How might the attitudes and feelings you expressed affect your achievement of these learning objectives?"
