Certificate in Community Leadership
The Community Leadership Program at Madonna University offers
students the opportunity to earn a certificate of completion
(15 semester hours) in Community Leadership while perusing their
major course of study.
With a Certificate in Community Leadership students will:
- Develop a moral and ethical framework for community service and future community leadership roles.
- Gain the necessary conceptual knowledge and experiential base to work for the betterment of diverse communities.
- Be well-prepared for active and lasting civic engagement upon graduation.
SOC 1300 Introduction to Community Leadership
In this course, students will consider various avenues to civic
involvement and their importance in maintaining a civil society.
Students will be introduced to the communitarian philosophy.
Principles and best practices in service learning will be discussed
so that students will be prepared to get the most out of their
community service and leadership experiences.

SOC 1010 Introduction to Sociology & Cultural Anthropology
The foundation and principles of social order, social control,
social institutions and social life in America and other cultures
are examined. Emphasis is on critical thinking about practices
and beliefs in a variety of social contexts. Focus areas may
include: Community Studies; Social Inequality; Politics and
Economy; Cultural Anthropology; and Religion and Science.
(4 semester hours to count toward Goal 5 of your General Education Requirement)

RST (HUM) 3100 Franciscan Values, Social Justice and Service
This new course will focus on the life and legacy of St. Francis of
Assisi and the implication for current efforts aimed at building
healthy communities. Contemporary dilemmas will be viewed
through and tradition – social justice, universal brotherhood,
moral utilization of the earth’s resources, and concern for the
needy. Students will examine the contemporary concepts of
“interrelatedness” and its parallels with Franciscan moral
theology.
(3 semester hours to count toward Goal 2 of General Education Requirement)

MGT 3160 Human Behavior and Leadership
Students will investigate leadership and its relationship to theory,
style, time management, problem solving, personal power, team
building and self-assessment. Prerequisite: Junior standing or
full-time work experience.
(2 semester hours to count toward Goal 5 of your General Education Requirement)

Service Learning Requirement
Students will integrate course concepts related to their major
while serving in the community. Any service learning course
within the major is acceptable.

SOC 4890 Seminar in Community Leadership
In this new course, students will be prepared for active
civic engagement and eventual leadership. Purposeful civic
learning though the students’ service learning leadership
placement and the creation of a community leadership
portfolio will be emphasized. The role of civic engagement
and community involvement in the maintenance of civil
analyzed.
Prerequisites: SOC 1010, SOC 1300, RST 3100, MGT 3160
and one previous service-learning based course.
